  For those who aren’t aware, when Moriah says she was “privately reproved”, that means that the elders *punished her*.
  

  
  

  Private reproval is a form of punishment inside the church where you are under restrictions.

  
  

  JWs will often punish all parties in consensual relationships outside of marriage and they apparently treated a 14 year old as having done that.

  Former JW Elder here. The reason Moriah was punished is because within JW policies, a minor can be a "willing participant" of their own abuse. Yes, you read that correctly, a "willing participant".

  
  

  That's how twisted their policies are. If you google "JW CSA willing participant" you can find a lot a examples. All these reminds me of a phrase I read shortly after leaving the JWs:

  Over the past 20 years, religious organisations from the Catholic Church to Jehovah’s Witnesses have had a reckoning with cases of child sexual abuse.

  Many states have tried to tackle the abuse by making clergy mandatory reporters of abuse to officials, just like doctors, therapists and teachers are.

  However, more than 30 states in the United States do not require church officials to report knowledge or allegations of child abuse if the information is deemed privileged, specifically coming from confession or counselling.

  It means that abuse can all too often be hidden - and survivors are left without recourse or justice. Fault Lines investigates how state laws in the US can lead to child sexual abuse in religious communities going unpunished.

  we wouldn't shoot the dog

  My uncle shot his dog for barking, and waking him up. I remember it being allowed in the kitchen, healing from the wound, it died a short time later.

  He worked 2nd shift, but wasn't a witness.
